Do you want to wake up each day knowing exactly what you are striving for? Knowing what your goals are and how you are going to achieve them?
In the days of 'flower power' - back in the 60s to young Millennials, the phrase used to describe someone who hadn't found their life's purpose was that they were: 'still finding themselves'. This was usually applied to people who job-hopped and didn't 'settle down' to one job for life with a husband/wife and 2.4 children. If you didn't fit the mould, if your ambitions outgrew your family's expectations there would be much tut-tutting and shaking of heads. Finding your Super Power is the equivalent of 'finding yourself'. When you know, absolutely know what it is you want to do and the life you want to achieve, and when those ambitions collide in perfect synergy, you've found your Super Power!
But what do you do if you don't know what your Super Power is? What if you haven't even got a Super Power? Well we can quash the last question, everyone has a Super Power, everyone has that one 'thing' that everyone knows, and you know, that you are good at, but most importantly you enjoy doing. So how can you identify your Super Power so that you build a life and a business that suits your purpose?
This first step is to differentiate between your Core (or Inner) goals and your Outer goals. If you're not familiar with this concept:
Core Goals are those that make you happy;
Outer Goals are those that identify you to the outside world, or how you want the outside world to see you.
These two goals can be completely separate but are intrinsically linked.
Core and Outer goals can be completely separate but if you want to achieve fulfilment in your life, must overlap. It may surprise you to know you can set an Outer Goal that ultimately doesn’t make you happy, but your Core Goals should always make you happy.
For example, an Outer Goal is usually something that you want so that you appear successful to the outside world; it maybe an expensive car, a large city apartment or a 7 figure income. However, achieving these goals might bring you into conflict with your Core goals.
A Core goal should be something you always enjoy doing. It should be something that removes negativity, self doubt and your inner critic. A Core goal makes you live in the present, not in the future. A Core goal should make you feel great doing what you love and focusses on your daily state of mind.
The challenge therefore, is to achieve a balance between your Core and Outer Goals, what brings them into alignment for you so that you stop making the mistake of choosing goals based on the destination not the journey, because ultimately your journey should bring you happiness on a daily basis.
Take some time now to really think about what works for you, what makes you happy and brings purpose into your life. Try to identify your Core and Outer Goals, then see which ones align. Example:
Be Creative daily.
Help others to achieve their goals.
Create a secure income for my family.
Buy a new car.
Buy a holiday home.
Develop my business network.
Here's how it might look:
Don’t worry if at first you struggle to find a balance between your Core and Outer goals, they will come to you. Look back at a time in your life when you were truly happy, when you enjoyed doing what you love all the time, not just some of the time. The key is to stop creating goals just to impress other people, but to set goals that will ultimately make you feel great on a daily basis.
This process will also help you find a niche for your business. Your niche business together with your synergistic Core and Outer goals create your Super Power. Once you have this, nothing can stand in your way.
